background
Thanks to a partnership with Tollsmart, a leading provider of toll price information across seven continents, Google Maps will soon display toll prices when you plan a trip.
From paper maps to those MapQuest directions your parents insisted on printing to the ever-improving tools of Google Maps, technology is always adapting to help travelers hit the open road with confidence. One big blind spot that remains? Tolls.
But that’s about to change—let’s break down the details.

Tollsmart is bringing detailed information on 10k+ toll locations to Google

In 2015,
Tollsmart
launched an app to help drivers find pricing information on tolls across the US. Over the last seven years, they’ve expanded their reach to seven continents and over 10,000 tolling locations—but the app isn’t free, making it less convenient and leaving some customers disgruntled.
But you won’t have to pay for Tollsmart’s data now. Instead, any Google Maps user will be able to access information on toll prices just by plotting a trip. Dropping your kid off at college? Planning a drive into the nearest national park? Getting ready for a cross-country move? No matter how long or exhausting your drive, it just got a little easier to plan smart trips.
If you live and commute in an area with lots of toll roads—such as the NYC metro area—you might have those toll amounts memorized already. But, as Tollsmart’s Leo Iogansen explains, “tolling systems are often local and can be quite complex.” Driving in an unfamiliar area sometimes means running into unexpected expenses in the form of toll booths.

How to keep road trips affordable

With Tollsmart data in Google Maps,
planning an affordable road trip
just got easier. Instead of calculating expenses based solely on distance and fuel prices, you’ll be able to see immediately if that alternate route that adds an extra 30 minutes also shaves off $25 in tolls.
