A few years ago, Porsche and Aston Martin began selling SUVs, upsetting purists who felt that
luxury car
brands should stick to classic models.
Well, it might have Enzo Ferrari spinning in his grave, but Ferrari has just taken a big step towards the SUV market too. Sure, we’ve known about Ferrari’s SUV plans for a couple of years, but without a timeline, it was easy to dismiss the notion. However, production of the Ferrari “Purosangue'' is now confirmed for 2022, with the first deliveries expected in 2023.
Angry? Excited? Here’s what we know about the controversial Ferrari SUV.

What do we know about the Ferrari Purosangue?

Purosangue means “thoroughbred” in Italian. It’s a pretty cool name and evocative of the carmaker’s illustrious past.
As explained by
Car and Driver
, Ferrari’s first SUV will probably boast a turbocharged hybrid V8 engine, but some people expect a V12. If they are right, the Purosangue will be one of the first V12 SUVs, alongside the colossal Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Perhaps as a result of the extra engine power, the Purosangue is expected to cost significantly more than the Lamborghini Urus ($225,500) and Aston Martin DBX ($179,986), starting around $320,000. We don’t know what it will look like, but Ferrari has promised more information—and photos of the bodywork—in the next couple of months.

Why are luxury automakers turning to SUVs?

MORE: Which Used Luxury Compact SUV Is the Best for Less Than $25,000?
While it is weird to imagine a Ferrari SUV, it’s not surprising to see another luxury brand entering the space. Traditionalists may scoff, but high-performance SUVs have proven to be lucrative for carmakers. In fact, the Uru accounted for 60% of all Lamborghinis sold last year!
Their popularity shouldn’t come as a surprise either. Americans have always loved big cars, and for many people, an SUV is more practical than a truck. They are generally more fuel-efficient too.
So if you’re looking for a car that combines off-road ability, on-road practicality, and unrivaled luxury, an SUV from Ferrari might just be the best choice!
