background
Car trends come and go, but ever since the mid-90s, the
SUV
has reigned supreme as one of the most popular vehicle types in the world.
While not many modern SUVs still bear resemblance to their
military predecessors
, these sporty and powerful passenger cars make up about half of all cars on the market.
Among the few holdouts to the SUV craze have been niche luxury brands like Ferrari, but that’s all about to change come 2023. According to
Motor1.com
, the Italian automaker is rolling out its first-ever SUV, the 2023 Ferrari Purosangue.
Jerry, the
car ownership super app
, looks into why the brand is finally releasing an SUV and everything we know about it so far.

Why luxury sports car brands are turning to SUVs

Much like its peers in the European luxury segment, Ferrari is known for making a certain type of car—powerful, sporty, and compact.
While the modern-day SUV was based on military vehicles, Ferrari was borne from the racing world. The brand has a long interwoven history with motorsports, and its offerings reflect that.
As SUVs continue to grow in popularity, however, brands known for making sports cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin, are turning to SUVs to broaden their appeal.

The 2023 Ferrari Purosangue will be ultra-exclusive

Ferarri is notorious for having limited-edition launches and even banning certain celebrities from driving its cars, and the release of the 2023 Ferrari Purosangue will be no exception.
Fans of the brand will likely be gunning for a reservation, but Ferrari has stated that sales of the Purosangue will be capped at no more than 20 percent of annual shipments.
While the limited release may be frustrating for enthusiasts who miss out on the first run, it’s a smart move for Ferrari. If the car does well, playing hard-to-get will only ramp up its appeal.
The Purosangue was first announced in September of 2018, so it’s been a long time coming. A few prototypes have been spotted around Italy, but the official debut is coming in September.

What we know about the Ferrari Purosangue so far

The Purosangue might resemble other SUVs more than any other Ferrari model yet, but expect performance to be closer to that of a sportscar than an off-roader. CEO Benedetto Vigna described it as a "true sports car, and unlike any other.”
The brand’s first-ever series production five-door car will be powered by a naturally aspirated twelve-cylinder engine and will ride on a totally new platform that can accommodate a plug-in hybrid setup as well.
In addition to having a higher ground clearance than other Ferrari cars, the Purosangue will come with all-wheel drive and a double-clutch automatic transmission. It seats four.
Until Ferrari officially debuts the new SUV, the rest of the details are under wraps. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait to save hundreds a year on your
