background
Anyone who wants to
buy a car
right now might find themselves paying more than they expected.
Several factors currently affecting supply and demand have resulted in dealers charging much more than the MSRP, making already expensive cars even pricier. Some
car brands
and models are affected more than others by these markups.
Fox News
listed some of the vehicles that have seen the greatest price increases as the result of the markups. Expensive cars on this list can be found for far greater than 10% more than their MSRPs.

The Jeep Wrangler is affected most by price markups

Several vehicles have seen high markups, but none have been affected more than the two-door Jeep Wrangler. This SUV model is currently selling for 26.7% more than its MSRP. In dollar value, buyers are paying $8,925 more than the price on the tag for the Wrangler.
The four-door version of the Wrangler, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also takes a high spot on the list. Wrangler Unlimited models are priced 22.9% higher than the MSRP, resulting in buyers paying an extra $9,534.
A third Jeep model is featured on the list as well, the Jeep Gladiator. This Jeep pickup is similarly affected by markups as the Wrangler Unlimited, as its price is 22.5% higher, an increase of $9,824.

Other expensive cars right now

There are 15 vehicles featured in the expensive cars list, including the three Jeeps listed above. The Chevy Corvette is being sold for $15,218 more than its MSRP. Because it is already an expensive vehicle, though, this is only the 11th highest price increase in terms of percentage.
Even vehicles that are not on the list are being affected by high markups.
ISeeCars
found in a study of 1.2 million new car sales that the average car is 9.9% more expensive than its suggested retail price. Why exactly are cars so expensive?
Current price increases can be largely attributed to supply chain issues and other problems that are affecting vehicle production. Supply has been unable to keep up with demand, so dealers have been able to successfully ask for higher prices.
Buyers are willing to pay the marked-up prices because opportunities to find their desired cars may be limited.

How can you save money with such high markups?

If you've been considering a new vehicle, it can be discouraging to see how expensive cars are right now. Saving money is possible, and
Kelley Blue Book
outlines a few ways to be a smart shopper among high markup prices.
The first tip, if possible, is to wait for prices to return to more normal levels. In a more typical market without production problems, cars are generally more affordable. A Jeep Wrangler might cost over 25% more than its MSRP right now, but that won't last forever.
Another tip is to be flexible with the exact vehicle that you buy. In a perfect world, you might find a car that has every feature exactly how you want it, down to the paint scheme. Finding the best deals might mean compromising on some features, though.
