background
Apple’s newest version of its operating software—the forthcoming iOS 16—includes significant updates to CarPlay, its vehicle integration and infotainment software.
The update will allow CarPlay to display information on more than one screen across a car’s dashboard, where it currently only displays on a single screen.
Apple previewed iOS 16 this week at their annual Worldwide Developer Conference, but details about the new iteration of CarPlay were limited.
According to a press release,
vehicles that support the new CarPlay will be announced late next year.

The future of CarPlay

The next generation of CarPlay allows for deeper integration with a car’s hardware, providing information for multiple screens across the dashboard. This means everything from music to air conditioning to navigation to the car’s speedometer and fuel gauge can be displayed through CarPlay, making a car’s entire dashboard look like an iPhone’s screen.
Everything We Know About Apple’s CarPlay Update
The updated CarPlay display will be customizable, allowing users to choose “gauge cluster designs,” though Apple has yet to reveal them. Additionally, CarPlay will add more support for widgets, showing drivers information from their Apple weather and calendar apps on their dashboard, though they should probably keep their eyes on the road.
We won’t know which cars will support these updates until late next year, but Volvo said their future models will do so

A new lock screen, iMessage editing, and other iOS 16 updates

The relatively limited update on the future of CarPlay was only a part of Apple’s presentation that focused on iOS 16, which is available to developers now. A public beta will be available to users in July.
The updated operating system is packed with new features, but Apple emphasized changes to the lock screen and iMessage functionality
Most immediately apparent are the visual changes to the lock screen—users can set the subject of a background photo in front of the time and other displays, giving a sense of depth. For the first time, users will also be able to customize their lock screen with font and color options, as well.
In terms of messaging, users will be able to edit or recall recently-sent iMessages, recover recently deleted messages, and mark conversations as unread
