The 2022 Infiniti QX80 May Not Be the Best Luxury SUV: Here's Why

The Infiniti QX80 appears to be an enticing option as a luxury SUV, but a closer look shows that there may be far better choices.

Luxury cars
are always fun to look at and consider, as they represent the best of what automakers can do with a car. And the Infiniti QX80 certainly aims to push the limit. It offers quite a few new features for the 2022 model year, including a brand-new infotainment screen.
Still, it may fall a little bit short. In fact, it might not be the best option in class, and here's why.

A look at the features and specs of the 2022 Infiniti QX80

On paper, the QX80 has a lot going for it. According to
Car and Driver
, it looks good on the outside, boasts a powerful engine, and is smooth to drive.
That’s all thanks to a 4.0-liter V-8 engine that gets 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. The punchy motor allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. That power comes at a cost, though, as the QX80 only manages 15 combined mpg—a concerningly low mark.
Still, there’s a lot to like about the QX80’s interior. The 2022 QX80 comes with a brand-new infotainment system, complete with a 12.3-inch touch screen, as well as some creature comfort features like wireless phone charging. Those extras drive up the price, though, and the QX80 starts at $72,000.

Unfortunately for Infiniti customers, the QX80 isn't the best SUV on the market. In fact, there’s little to separate it from a more mundane ride. That's because Infiniti is owned by Nissan, and the QX80 has a lot in common with the Nissan Armada.
While the Nissan Armada is a pretty good family SUV, it doesn’t exactly compete with the Range Rovers and Porsches that Infiniti is up against.
It's no surprise that, according to
Consumer Reports
, the QX80 is only the sixth-best luxury SUV in its segment. Its overall score of 58 out of 100 isn't great, and its reliability and owner satisfaction scores were even worse. It only received a 2 out of 5 in both of those categories. Furthermore, the V-8 offers less power than some smaller engines in class.

Anyone who wants a similar SUV to the QX80 could save a couple thousand dollars and buy the Armada instead. But, if you're seriously considering buying the QX80, then it may be worthwhile looking at other luxury SUVs.
The QX80 starts at $72,000, and there are a lot of great luxury SUVs at around that price point. The BMW X7 only costs about $76,000, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS starts at around $78,000.
Both of those German luxury SUVs perform great on the road, and are nicer on the inside, too. The Lexus LX is also a great option, but it'll cost a bit more—around $88,000.
