The 2022 Honda Passport May Give the Ford Bronco a Run for Its Money

Thanks to the TrailSport package, the 2022 Honda Passport is getting an upgrade. With increased ground clearance, off-road tires, and available all-wheel drive, the Passport becomes a serious contender against outdoor titans like the Subaru Forester and Ford Bronco.

background
The 2022 Honda Passport may not be the first vehicle that you think of when it comes to adventure-oriented SUVs. But as Honda’s proven with its new TrailSport package, it could be time for us to all reconsider.
Starting at around $39,000, the 2022 Honda Passport may be a viable competitor against the
Ford Bronco
, Subaru Forester, and Jeep, thanks to new add-ons and aggressive aesthetic and performance changes.
From 18-inch rims to an optional
all-wheel drive
feature, learn more about why the Honda Passport could be your favorite new SUV.

What’s new about the 2022 Honda Passport?

The 2022 Honda Passport looks amazing, as
Car and Driver
points out, but this SUV has had more than just a facelift.
If we’re being honest, most buyers should skip right over the base model EX-L, opting for the TrailSport package, which starts at $43,695. While buyers can choose the EX-L and still get all-wheel drive for an additional $2,100, the TrailSport offers the best balance of price and utility to satisfy most anyone.
The TrailSport comes with 245/60R-18 Firestone Destination LE 2 all-season tires and 8.1 inches of ground clearance, more than the Honda Pilot offers. This mid-size SUV also touts a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs, thanks to a 3.5-liter V6 that pumps out 280 horsepower. The 2022 Honda Passport also has a reasonable 0-60 mph time at a little over 6.0 seconds.

Should buyers choose the 2022 Honda Passport over the Forester or Bronco?

The 2022 Honda Passport does its best to keep up with the competition, as
Consumer Reports
shows—a variable all-wheel-drive system and torque-vectoring rear axle help boost its off-road cred whilst competing with newly-crowned legends like the Forester and Bronco.
In terms of price, the 2022 Honda Passport is nearly $12,000 more at base price than the Forester (which starts at $25,195) and more than $10,000 more than the base model 2022 Ford Bronco.
While the Honda Passport leads in terms of acceleration, it lags in fuel economy, and has a worse road test than either the 2022 Forester or Bronco. According to Consumer Reports, it scored 18 points less (earning a 72/100) than the Forester, and 10 points less than the Bronco.
All three vehicles come with virtually the same standard safety options, including rear cross-traffic warnings, traction control, stability control, and pedestrian detection monitoring. Buyers have three great vehicles to choose from; but if price, fuel economy, and owner satisfaction matter more than owning a Honda, the 2022 Ford Bronco or 2022 Subaru Forester are better picks.
