The 2019 Corvette is Still Smokin'

There are many polarizing opinions on the Corvette, but no one can argue that it isn’t one of the iconic sports cars of America. The 2019 model year was one of the best in recent years, helped on by its impressive power and even better price.

Few things can encapsulate true Americana better than a
Chevy
Corvette. As a matter of fact, a certain U.S. president is having a hard time retiring his own 'Vette since taking office.
While the Chevy Corvette is a proud piece of American car ingenuity, its reputation has taken a beating in the past few decades. In most sports car chatter, the Corvette is known as the poor man's sports car. We think that's an unfair assessment, especially after examining the brilliance of the 2019 Corvette.

History of the Corvette

The first Corvette debuted at the 1953 GM Motorama car show. Its name is derived from a small, maneuverable naval warship. The name is fitting, as the Corvette is more so a performance sports car as opposed to the jerky muscle cars that would become popular in subsequent decades.
In the 1960s, Corvettes became known as "America's Sports Car." Prior to the Corvette, most sports cars had to be imported from Europe. The Corvette gave Americans the opportunity to purchase a domestic speed demon. But just like Route 66, the Corvette's popularity would fade.
In the late ‘80s and ‘90s, Corvettes became known as "cheap" sports cars. They could no longer compete with Ferrari or Porsche in the eyes of most Americans. Chevy took note, and would beef up the Corvette in the following years.

The 2019 Corvette debuted with wide critical acclaim. Not bad for a vehicle that was the last model year of its generation.
Car and Driver
liked the 2019 Corvette so much that they awarded it as one of the best cars of that year.
The 2019 Corvette does have a lackluster interior, but it makes up for it with what's under the hood. The car carries a beefy 6.2-liter V8 engine with direct fuel injection. This speed demon can produce up to 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
But our favorite stat is its price. The base Stingray model starts at $56,995 and the higher-end Grand Sport trim goes for $66,995.

If you are in the market for a Corvette, it is worth comparing the 2019 'Vette to newer models. After all, Chevy redesigned the Corvette for the year-end model 2020. Chevy also teased the return of the legendary Corvette Z06, but to keep everything apples to apples, we'll just compare the base Corvette.
By most accounts, the new eighth generation Corvette (C8) is an improvement from the seventh generation. There are a few exceptions. Some car critics reported that the C8's engine is too quiet for a sports car. While it still carries a comparable V8 engine to the C7, it's hard to hear unless you opt for one of the convertible models. Nonetheless, the 2020-2022 C8s remained on Car and Driver's best 10 list.
