Honda Ridgeline: fit for an adventure

You can find the 2012 Honda Ridgeline for anywhere between $15,500 and $18,100. The used truck has an owner-reported 18 mpg and uses a car-based, unitized body structure.

Owners are a fan of the truck's versatility and smooth ride. The pickup sports a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 250 hp. While it’s no Ford Ranger, the Ridgeline can pull a 5,000-pound trailer to 60 mph in 20.5 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction, and the variable torque management system activated through the “VTM 4 Lock” switch comes in handy if you get stuck. The system sends power to selected wheels and can work in first, second, or reverse gears up to 18 mph in wet conditions.

The Honda Ridgeline features a lockable, watertight storage hold at the bottom of the bed, a flexible tailgate that opens vertically or horizontally, and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Despite being a truck, the cockpit is spacious and roomy. Thanks to the high seating position and low floor, riders may mistake the interior for a minivan. Drivers will find the dead pedal comfortable and well-placed but may find the steering wheel uncomfortably far away.

Besides the blindspot created by the unique sloped bodywork aside the rear window, visibility over the hood is great. If you find a 2013 model, a rear-view camera is standard on all trims.

The cloth bucket front seats are comfy and supportive. Most drivers will find the lumbar and thigh support up to their standards, especially since it can be adjusted. While lateral support is generous, some riders may find the head restraint too close for comfort.

In the back, three adults can sit comfortably in the rear seat, with high seat cushions and excellent thigh support. Passengers also appreciate the extra leg and headroom without any side-to-side contact with their fellow riders.

Big, sturdy grab handles assist when entering the vehicle, as does the grab handle on the passenger side A-pillar.

When it comes to safety and driver assist features, the 2012 Honda Ridgeline comes standard with head-protection curtain airbags that extend to protect the heads of front- and rear-outboard passengers and side-impact airbags, extending from the front seatbacks. In side impacts and rollovers, the curtain airbags deploy.

The seats come with three-point seatbelts and adjustable anchors are provided for passengers in the front. Pretensioners are utilized in the event of a crash to reduce belt slack.
