To obtain a replacement title in Michigan, you’ll need to complete a duplicate title application, submit it to the Secretary of State (SOS), and pay a fee of $15.
A certificate of title represents legal documentation of vehicle ownership. Whenever you move to a new state or sell your vehicle, you’ll need to complete a title transfer. But if the title is lost or damaged, you’ll need to apply for a title replacement, first.
Obtaining a duplicate title is relatively straightforward, but the process tends to vary by state. That’s why it’s crucial to understand your state’s unique requirements for title replacements.
Luckily, car insurance comparison and broker app Jerry has outlined everything you need to know about replacing your car’s title in Michigan.

What you’ll need to get a replacement title in Michigan

To apply for a title replacement in Michigan, you’ll need to gather specific information and documentation beforehand. Be sure to have all of the following:
  • Your driver’s license, state ID card, or passport
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Vehicle information (make, model, year)
  • $15 replacement title fee

How to apply for a replacement title in Michigan

You can apply for a title replacement online, in person, or by mail.
To apply online, submit an application and pay the $15 fee through the Michigan ExpressSOS service. Online applications are not possible if you have notified the Secretary of State’s office of a change of address within the last 10 days or if you are using a power of attorney or appointment of agent for the application.
To apply in person:
  • Visit a Secretary of State (SOS) branch office
  • Fill out a title replacement application
  • Show proof of identification (ex: driver’s license)
  • Pay the $15 duplicate title fee
  • For same-day instant title service, there is an additional $5 fee
If the title owner is unable to appear, you will also need to fill out an Appointment of Agent (TR-128) form. This will allow another person to sign the title application in lieu of the original owner.
If you are currently located out of state and need a replacement title, you can apply for a duplicate title by mail:
  • Write your out-of-state mailing address on the application
  • Include a photocopy of your driver’s license or state ID card
  • Pay the $15 duplicate title fee
  • To pay by credit card, include your credit card information on the application and fax the application to 517-636-5865
  • To pay by check or money order, make it payable to the “State of Michigan” and send the application and payment to the following address:
Michigan Department of State
Special Services Branch
7064 Crowner Drive
Lansing, MI 48918
Please note that the title replacement process in Michigan is not one size fits all. Before you head to your local SOS office, you should contact the Information Center at 888-767-6424 to ensure you have all of your paperwork squared away.
