newest artist started her career on the Today Show at age 10, playing the piano. These days, you’re more likely to see her with her signature shades and a Stratocaster guitar, and she’s moved on from covering Alicia Keys to composing her own R&B ballads.H.E.R. might be new to your commercial break, but she’s been scooping up awards for a few years now. In 2019, her self-titled debut compilation album was nominated for five Grammys, winning two including Best R&B Album of the year. In just this year, she won her fifth Grammy (“Best Traditional R&B Performance”) for her song “Fight For You,” written for the 2021 Black Panthers biopic Judas and the Black Messiah.
But taking the Nationwide stage is an opportunity she wasn’t expecting. Like most Gen Z Americans, H.E.R. grew up with the “On Your Side” jingle, but “I never thought I’d be the one singing it…It’s just so fun to take something you already know and kind of make it your own.” Writing her take on the Nationwide jingle, H.E.R. says, is like “be[ing] part of somewhat of a legacy.”
