The California Gold Rush
Sparked by the discovery of gold nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in 1848, gold-seeking miners traveled near and far to what was then only the California territory. The arrival of the ‘49ers, as they are affectionately called today, increased the population from 1000 to 100,000 by the end of 1849.
By 1852, at the peak of the California Gold Rush, a total of two billion dollars worth of precious metal was discovered and extracted from the area. The phenomenon played a pivotal role in shaping mid-19th century American history and fast-tracked California to statehood. It’s also why we now call California the Golden State.

Beaches
Ask people to say the first thing that comes to their mind when they think of California, and invariably beaches will be the number one answer. Up and down the coast, you can find some of the most beautiful and most famous beaches in the world.

Tourists and fitness enthusiasts head to Muscle Beach, a small outdoor gym situated along the sands of Venice Beach made famous by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the body-builder turned actor who later went on to become California’s 38th governor.
Adjacent to Venice Beach is the world-famous Santa Monica Pier, home of the Pacific Park Wheel, one of the world’s best-known Ferris wheels around the globe. Located right on Santa Monica State Beach, the pier is home to amusement rides, carnival games, eateries, and a number of vendors.
