Why does the carbon monoxide detector go off when there are no gas appliances?

My carbon monoxide detector went off this morning. I left the house and called the fire department to be safe, but I’m confused—why does my carbon monoxide detector go off when there are no gas appliances?

Good thing you left the house after your alarm went off. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer—you should always exit your home when your carbon monoxide alarm rings. However, gas appliances are just one-way carbon monoxide can build up in the home.
Here are some other possible causes for a carbon monoxide build-up:
  • Oil-burning appliances, like a furnace
  • Your car running in a closed garage
  • Wood and coal-burning appliances, like a fireplace
Or, your carbon monoxide alarm could be malfunctioning. However, never assume a carbon monoxide alarm is a mistake—leave the house and call the fire department! It could save your life.
