What is an AGM battery’s life expectancy?

I just got a brand new car, my first new car ever. But my dad is a serious Debbie Downer and says the AGM battery won’t last as long as a traditional battery. So what is an AGM battery? And what’s an AGM battery’s life expectancy?

Congrats on getting your first brand new car! It’s really exciting going from used cars to new ones, especially with all of their new features. It’s a bummer your dad said that, but let’s not allow that to spoil the fun!
Absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries have only recently been showing up in newer cars, and they’re very rapidly growing in popularity over old flooded batteries for a very simple reason: AGM batteries are better in nearly every way. Sorry, Dad.
AGM batteries outlast flooded batteries, sometimes by a 2:1 ratio. An AGM battery can last five to seven years, or even more. Flooded batteries usually only last three to five years.
The old flooded batteries were great for providing quick, short bursts of energy to get a car running. But today, we’re asking more and more of our car batteries, and they need to operate in different ways.
Modern cars have infotainment consoles, heated seats, USB ports, wireless phone chargers, and hyper-advanced safety features that can sense cars and pedestrians. They can keep to a lane, or even drive themselves. The old flooded batteries just weren’t cutting it.
And yes, you can technically revive flooded batteries. But for those of us who don’t want to dress to the nines in Breaking Bad cosplay and mess with battery acid, the AGM battery is a better option.
There’s really only one aspect where a flooded battery beats an AGM battery: cost. The AGM battery costs two to three times as much as the old school flooded battery. But it also lasts longer, provides better power to modern electronics, and is generally better in every other conceivable way.
Here’s something else that’s severely outdated and probably won’t be around much longer: shopping for car insurance by manually comparison shopping for rates. Doing that these days is like cooking your food with whale oil, like some kind of pilgrim!
