Why does it look like there is glitter in my engine oil?

I’ve been changing my engine oil for several years, but I’ve never seen anything like this. What could cause my car’s used engine oil to fill with glitter?

Taking your car’s maintenance schedule into your own hands is a rewarding experience, barring hiccups like these. The “glitter” in your car’s engine oil is tiny metal shavings from the engine.
As new cars break in and fine particles from the machining process clear out, their engine oil can appear glittery. Since you've maintained your car for several years, glitter may indicate that the engine is deteriorating.
We recommend taking your car to a licensed mechanic so they can perform a full engine inspection. A car engine is the one component where you don’t want to let a potential problem fester—there could be much more than glitter in your engine oil next time!
