I need to learn how to drive, but I don’t know how to find a good school. What qualities should you look out for in a good driving school?

Learning how to drive is a big process, but it’s not too difficult when you have the right instruction. That said, here are the most important qualities you should look for in a driving school:
  • Licensed and insured: The first step to assess in a driving school is making sure they’re state-licensed and have the proper insurance for young drivers. You should be able to find licensed schools by asking your local DMV for recommendations.
  • Safe cars: Driving schools typically own cars for students to use to practice driving. While licensed schools should have their cars inspected annually, it never hurts to check for yourself.
  • Experienced instructors: The instructors in your school should be trained and experienced. While each state requires instructors to pass rigorous licensing exams, you should always feel free to ask about the instructors’ experience before you hop in the car.
  • Background checks: Some driving schools may or may not run background checks on their driving instructors. But while you’re learning to drive, you’ll need to feel safe and comfortable with the person sitting next to you. To stay on the safe side, you should ask the school whether or not they run background checks.
  • Cost: Some driving schools will be significantly more expensive than others. If you’re learning to drive on a budget, picking a school may involve weighing your options. But if you can afford to lay out the money for a top-tier school, it may be worthwhile.
