What should you do when driving through a construction zone?

My friend got a huge fine for speeding through a construction zone and I don’t want the same thing to happen to me. What are some tips for driving through a construction zone?

Driving through a construction zone requires more care than driving anywhere else due to workers being present, obstacles like cones, and narrow or shifting lane patterns.
When driving through a construction zone, you should:
  • Slow down to the posted speed limit.
  • Watch out for machinery and workers entering the roadway.
  • Leave adequate room between your car and the car in front of you. Instead of two seconds, you may want to increase the space up to five seconds.
  • Avoid brake-checking tailgaters. This may cause them to swerve, which could result in an accident or the injury of a worker.
  • Never pass other drivers on the shoulder or median.
If you’re caught speeding in a construction zone, expect your fine to be double what it would be in most cases. Furthermore, if you hit a worker, you risk jail time and a fine of up to $10,000.
