What kind of tires fit my car?

I’m supposed to buy a set of all-season tires for my car, but I have no clue which ones to buy. How do I know what size is right?

Picking out new all-season tires for the first time can be a challenge. To find the tire size—look at the sidewall of your tire or the inside frame of the driver side door.
The tire size will look something like 255/55 R18 XL. Here’s how the numbers break down:
  • The first three numbers note the width of the tire in millimeters
  • The next two are the aspect ratio (how much bigger the height is than the width)
  • The letter in the middle indicates the construction of the tire
  • The two numbers after the letter give the rim diameter in inches
  • Finally, there may be additional numbers indicating the load rating and a letter to indicate the speed
