What kind of oil does a 2006 Nissan Altima take?

I have been gifted an older car and want to use it as a practice/ learning car for my teenage daughter. I thought we would start with the basics—an oil change. What kind of oil does a 2006 Nissan Altima take?

! What a great project for you and your daughter.
The 2006
Nissan Altima
takes an SAE 5W-30 motor oil. This oil can be conventional or synthetic, but the manufacturer says fully synthetic oil is preferred.
Your car’s engine is made to work with engine oil of specific density and viscosity, so sticking with the manufacturer’s recommendation is important. Here are some of the functions of motor oil in your car:
  • Reduce friction. Engine oil lubricates moving engine parts, coating them to prevent the wear caused when metal parts rub directly against each other.
  • Cool the engine. Less friction means less heat—additionally, oil circulates the heat through the engine, pulling it away from particularly hot spots and dispersing it evenly.
  • Clean the engine. Engine oil traps and suspends particles or corrosives in the oil and carries them away to the filter. Oil is also formulated to neutralize acidic compounds that can damage your engine.
While your Altima is built to use either conventional or synthetic oil, synthetics tend to last longer and perform better than conventional oils. They also keep your engine cleaner. Synthetic oil costs around $2 more per quart, but that is one area where it makes sense to pay a little more.
