What is the driving task?

My son just got his learner's permit and he wants me to help him with some of his driving material. Driver's ed is way different now than when I took it and it talks about the driving task. I've never heard of this before. To save face with my son, can you tell me what the driving task is?

“Used to teach newer students about driving, the driving task is the set of variables a driver might come across when they’re behind the wheel. The driving task includes:
  • Vehicle
  • Driver
  • Traffic
  • Road/road conditions
  • Weather
  • Light
These variables can all change individually, in combination, or all at once. But by knowing this, students can have a better idea of what might await them when they’re driving.
