What is the difference between rough carpentry and finish carpentry?

I am working with a contractor to build the home of my dreams! He keeps using the terms rough carpentry and finished carpentry. I may have told him I was a housing expert so he wouldn’t try to take advantage of me, so I need some help. What is the difference between rough carpentry and finish carpentry?

Congratulations on the new home! Rough carpentry is more basic and structural, while finish carpentry is more finishing, detail work.
Here is a break-down of these two important house building terms:
Rough carpentry is basic, earlier-stage work. This gives you the structure and frame of the house. Without rough carpentry, there’s no frame or foundation to build on.
Finish carpentry is more concerned with appearance than function. This is adding trim, detail to the wood, moldings, and more. This is one of the last stages in the process—usually right before painters come in.
