The 2007 Matrix has a spacious back seat and great fuel economy: 25 miles per gallon in the city, and 31 on the highway. The 2012 model achieves the same mileage and offers a comfortable, sporty ride.
The Toyota Matrix has an overall reputation for dependability, too. RepairPal gives the Matrix a 4.5 out of 5.0 dependability rating, and the 2012 edition has an average annual repair cost of just $448. The 2007 edition has an even lower average annual repair cost of $287.
However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for the Matrix. Some models should be avoided, like the 2003 and 2009 model years. The 2003 Matrix suffered a fair amount of engine failure issues, while the 2009 Matrix had problems like excessive oil consumption, airbag inflator rupture, and sticking accelerator pedal—the latter of which can lead to dangerous acceleration.
