What body senses are involved when you're driving?

Which of the body senses are involved when you’re driving? I’ve been trying to become more aware of what I’m doing while I’m driving so that I can be safer, but I don’t know which senses I should be focused on.

It’s great that you’re working to be a better driver! Actually, all of the body senses except for taste are involved when you’re driving, although you certainly rely on some more than others:
  • Sight is important for obvious reasons. You need to see the road in front of you, and any potential hazards in your path.
  • Hearing is important when there are emergency vehicles nearby, but your ears can also alert you to nearby accidents, railroad crossings, or even problems with your car.
  • Smell
might seem like a weird one, but you definitely use it while driving. Your sense of smell can alert you to mechanical problems in your engine, like burning oil.
  • Touch will give you the ability to change settings in your car without taking your eyes off of the road. You might also feel changes in the path ahead, like the rumble strips designed to alert you if you drift off of the road.
