My wife and I just booked a three-week trip to Hawaii. We’re going to spend a majority of the time on the Big Island to avoid crowds while also seeing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I found a great deal on an Airbnb in Kona, so on some days, we may just explore locally. What are some of the must-see attractions in Kona?

, so if you want to avoid the crowds, you’re in the right place. While the volcanoes are the big-ticket item on the island, Kona still provides plenty of entertainment options to keep you busy. The best things to do in Kona are:- Explore Hulihee Palace. Once the vacation home of Hawaiian royalty, the palace is now a museum that showcases koa wood furniture, Victorian artifacts, and more. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10.
- Go on a manta ray or dolphin adventure. Several companies run these types of tours, so you’re sure to find something that fits into your schedule.
- Take a tour of Thunder Mountain Coffee Plantation. Open seven days a week, the plantation offers 4x4 tours, lava tube walks, or just a cup of fresh joe.
