Is it illegal to not wear shoes while driving?

I’m thinking about embracing a shoe-free lifestyle, but I spend a lot of time in my car. Is it illegal to not wear shoes while driving?

I hope your lifestyle adjustment brings you joy if you choose to pursue it. No—it is not illegal to drive without shoes in the United States. Any legislation on the matter would be made at the state level, and as of yet, most states don’t even mention footwear in their rules of the road.
Legality aside, driving without shoes is not considered a
safe driving practice
because it creates the following risks:
  • Your foot can slip off the pedals more easily with socks or bare feet
  • Your foot can get tired and cramp more easily without the extra support a shoe provides
  • Your feet have nothing to help protect them if you’re ever in an accident, especially if you have to navigate glass shards and scrap metal
If you want to avoid wearing shoes at your various destinations, consider keeping a pair of shoes in your car specifically for driving. You may need a couple of extra air fresheners but the extra safety measures could be worth it.
