Is buying a house next to a farm a bad idea?

I’ve been looking for a new house, and the other day I saw one I really love for sale. It’s right next to a farm, which seems like it might be weird. I don’t know. I’ve lived in the city my whole life. Are there any downsides to buying a house next to a farm?

Great question! Whether or not buying a house next to a farm is a bad idea depends on how big the farm is and what type of farm it is.
If it’s a small crop-based farm, with maybe one or two animals for the owner’s use, then it’s not a bad idea at all—you won’t find many nicer places to live than that!
If it’s a beef farm or any sort of large industrial farm, on the other hand, then buying a house near it isn’t a good idea.
Apart from the smell that those types of farms create, industrial farms are also shockingly deadly to live near. Research has proven that living close to large meat or poultry farms is directly correlated to drastic increases in the frequency of several severe health issues. Unless the farm you’re talking about is crop-based and fairly small, you do not want to buy a home nearby.
