Is an intensive driving course worth it?

My son is about to turn 16 and he’s got his driving test coming up in a few months. We’ve heard some great things about intensive driving courses, but we aren’t sure if they would be as helpful as traditional driving lessons. We don’t want him to rush onto the roads before he’s ready! What are the benefits of intensive driving courses?

It’s great that you’re working with your son before his driving test! An intensive driving course can definitely be worth it, but it will depend on what type of learner your son is. To make sure it’s the right fit for him, consider these pros and cons.
Pros:
  • An intensive driving course is the fastest way to learn to drive. As the name suggests, these courses blitz through tons of material in just a week or two—so, if your son is good at learning in high-pressure environments, this could be the best option.
  • Even if your son fails his driving test after an intensive driving course, he’ll probably only need to brush up on one or two lessons to pass it the next time.
  • Intensive driving courses usually have fixed prices, so they can be great for budget planning.
Cons:
  • Intensive driving courses can take six to eight hours of driving each day, so they are certainly demanding. For learners who like to space out their lessons and take some time on the road in between, traditional driving lessons might be the best move.
  • Intensive driving courses might force your son to take time off from school or work to attend the course. So, it’s best to schedule it in the summer if you’re able!
  • Though they’re often cheaper in the long run, intensive driving courses require a hefty upfront fee. Traditional driving lessons are broken up into smaller incremental payments.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you and your son to decide on the best learning method, whether it’s a high-pressure driving course or a more laid-back lesson plan.
No doubt, though, you can both agree that saving money is a good thing.
