How to open the gas tank on a 2018 Subaru Outback
I can’t figure out how to open the gas tank on my 2018 Subaru Outback. Don’t judge; I’ve only had this car for two days! We took it camping and it took the trails like nothing I’ve ever seen, but now I’m back in town and when I push on the gas tank door nothing happens?

If you’ve only ever driven cars with “push it and pop it” gas tanks, these aren’t obvious. But no worries, we’ll help you get your Subaru Outback gassed up without fuss.
Open the driver’s side door and look on the floor to the left of the driver’s seat. You’ll see a small tab-like lever with a fuel symbol on it. Simply tug up on that lever and the gas tank door will open.
The gas cap is on the passenger side of the car in all modern Subarus. There’s an easy way to tell where the gas cap is in any car you’re in: look for a little arrow on the fuel gauge, next to the fuel symbol. That arrow is pointing toward the side of the car where you fill up.
When you’re done fueling up, screw on the gas cap fully, until you hear a click. As a safety measure, Subarus won’t start if the gas cap isn’t on properly.
We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying your Subaru Outback! It’s an incredible vehicle, and driving it in the snow just once is all it takes to fall deeply in love with the whole brand. They really are that good.
