How much does a car water pump replacement cost?

I took my car to the mechanic the other day the guy told me that I need a new water pump–then he tells me that it’s going to cost $600 to get the pump replaced. I told him not to do it since I feel like he was maybe overcharging me. $600 seems like a lot. How should a water pump replacement in a car usually cost?

A bad pump can cause serious damage and you should definitely get that repair done as soon as possible. As for the price you were quoted, I wouldn’t say that he’s giving you an unreasonable price, no. Typically, a car water pump replacement costs between $450 and $650.
$600 might be slightly on the higher end of that scale, but it’s still well within the normal range of prices for that service.
