How many Toyota AE86 models were made?

My dad was telling me about this car he used to drive, and he was bragging about how rare and cool they are now. Exactly how rare was the Toyota AE86? How many models were made?

Your dad is right and wrong… let us explain. While they were more prevalent in Japan than they were in North America, YouTube’s JuiceboxForYou estimates that more than 360,000 Toyota AE86 models were made.
However, only about 18,000 made it to the North American market, making them rarer for Americans to drive. After four decades, there aren’t nearly that many left.
As the predecessor to the
Toyota 86
, the
Scion FR-S
, and the
Toyota GR86
, the
Toyota
 AE86 was a small coupe that was an ‘80s-era
Toyota Corolla
 Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno.
Despite its age, the AE86 has reached borderline cult status among car enthusiasts, and it’s still a popular choice for drivers looking to get into track racing, rallying, and drifting—especially the Sport GT-S models. The AE86 marked the end of the rear-wheel-drive Corolla models, but their legacy lives on.
