How long is the waitlist for a driving test in the United States?

My family and I moved to the States for my work right before my daughter could get her license back home. We’re trying to schedule her test now. How long can we expect the waiting list to be for her driving test?

Welcome to the States! Unlike some other countries, the United States does not use an official waiting list to take a driver’s test. You’ll likely have to
meet certain state requirements
, like age limits and learner’s permit minimums, but the only wait you might run into is at your local DMV.
You can make an appointment for your driving test by doing one of the following:
  • Schedule online through the website of your local DMV, Secretary of State (SOS), or Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • Call the DMV, SOS, or DOT office where you would like to take your test
  • Go in-person to the office where you would like to take your test
You may experience wait times if you have to call or go in person, but you should have your appointment date scheduled within a few hours. Check your state’s requirements for new drivers before scheduling, and make sure that your new driver is covered by your car insurance policy.
