How do you remove a name from a car registration in California?

My partner and I just broke up. We bought a car together, but now I will be the sole owner. How do I remove his name from my California car registration?

I’m sorry to hear about your breakup!
To remove a name from your car registration in
California
, you’ll first need to
remove the name from your vehicle title
The process will depend on the wording of the current title:
  • If the names are joined by "and": You and your ex-partner will both have to sign as "sellers" and you will be listed as the "buyer".
  • If the names are joined by "or" or "and/or": Your ex-partner will sign as the "seller," and you will be listed as "buyer".
Fill out the buyer and seller information according to this information, then submit the filled-out title to the DMV. You may need to pay a $15 transfer fee.
Once approved, the DMV will provide you with new documents and vehicle registration.
Keep in mind: You’ll have to update your
car insurance
policy once your previous co-owner’s name has been removed from your California title and registration.
