How do you put an Alfa Romeo in Neutral?
I rewarded myself recently with a shiny new Alfa Romeo Giulia. It’s been rainy and muddy here lately, so I wanted to take my Giulia to the car wash, but I’m confused about something rather embarrassing. How do you put an Alfa Romeo in Neutral?

Don’t feel embarrassed—the Alfa Romeo’s gear shifter system is notoriously confusing. To put an Alfa Romeo in Neutral, try the following:
- From “Park,” press on the brake pedal, grasp the gear shifter with the back button depressed, and pull the gear shifter down to “Drive”
- Without pressing the gear shifter button on the back, push the lever forward to “Neutral”
The same process applies when moving the shifter from “Reverse,” only you’ll pull the lever backward instead of forward. The key step here is to NOT press the gear shift button on the back when moving the lever into Neutral in your Alfa Romeo.
To get your Giulia out of Neutral once the car wash is over, just press on your brake pedal and pull the lever back (with the button) into the “Drive” position. Since car wash anxiety is a very real thing, it never hurts to practice putting your Alfa Romeo in and out of Neutral a few times in an empty parking lot or driveway beforehand.
