What Do I Do When I Encounter Curves While Driving at Night?

I’ve recently moved to a more rural area with windier roads and fewer streetlamps. I’m normally a pretty careful driver, but I’ve still had a few close shaves when going through curves. Am I missing something? What should I do when I encounter curves while driving at night?

Even the most careful drivers can be thrown for a loop when dealing with curved roads at night, especially in dark areas. You can definitely drive safely around curves at night, but it does involve mastering some new driving habits. But as long as you keep a few simple things in mind, you’ll be able to handle those winding roads in no time.
Keep it slow and steady while you approach the curve. If you’re driving on a single-lane road, stay to the outside of the lane, as close to the shoulder as you safely can. Be on the lookout for any signs of an oncoming vehicle or object, such as headlight beams or engine sounds.
If you were using your high beams before you approached the curve, turn them off. You may inadvertently blind an oncoming driver. Stick to your regular
headlights
at least until you’re sure there are no oncoming cars and you’re safely around the curve.
Bear in mind that your headlights won’t catch anything around the curve. Just because you can’t see anything ahead of you doesn’t mean there isn’t anything around the corner. Be on the lookout for mirrors or other assists that may be installed to help you see around the curve.
Believe it or not, collisions on rural roads make up a pretty significant percentage of the total accidents each year. Make sure your
collision insurance
is up to date!
