How do you junk a car in NY?

Follow these steps to junk your car in New York:
- Find a buyer: Compare offers from motor vehicle wreckers and junk car dealers before settling on an organization. Different places will make unique offers, so comparing quotes is an easy way to maximize your payout.
- Transfer your title: In New York, junking your car is like selling it. So you’ll need to transfer the title to whatever dealer or wrecker you choose. To do so, simply fill out the title and place the name of the auto wrecker/dealer in the new owner section.
- Get a receipt: Improper disposal could earn you a fine of up to $1,000. That said, it’s vital you get a receipt from the dealer that includes the car’s make and model, vehicle identification number, the date of the sale, and the organization’s name.
From there, you should be home-free! The dealer should pay you for your junk car, and they’ll dispose of it for you. Remember to cancel your car insurance policy once the dealer takes your car. Otherwise, you could be on the hook for months of unpaid premiums.
