How do you get over a driving mistake?

I’m working on completing my required supervised driving hours, but I keep having to stop every time I make a mistake. I just get so upset. How do you move on when you make a driving mistake?

First, find some comfort in knowing that even the most experienced drivers get upset over making mistakes—welcome to the road. The next time you make an error while driving, try utilizing your support system and learning from the mistake.
Mistakes are inevitable and invaluable in
the process of learning
. Remember that you are driving with a supervisor, so they can share the responsibility of keeping you safe and help you grow in your learning.
Take the following steps when you make a mistake:
  • Identify a solution: Acknowledge what caused the mistake, why it was a mistake, and a course of action that will prevent the mistake in the future.
  • Talk to your supervisor: Ask them questions like what they would have done differently or how they would have recovered.
  • Avoid disaster hypotheticals: If you are alive and able to analyze the mistake—that’s what matters.
  • Accept your feelings: Embarrassment and shame are going to happen, but they are feelings and not facts
If driving mistakes continue to challenge you or get worse, talk to a professional therapist or counselor. By taking actions like these, you are doing everything in your power to overcome your inner saboteur and
become a better driver
.
