How do you fix a small rust spot on your car?

I recently noticed some rust on my Ford Thunderbird underneath the gas tank. It’s a small spot, about 2” across, and it doesn’t seem bad enough for a trip to the body shop. How can I fix a small rust spot on my car?

First of all, good eye! Gas tanks are common areas for rust to grow. The earlier you find and eliminate rust, the better. Even a small rust spot can quickly become a big problem, eating through your car’s body and corroding your exposed engine parts.
You can fix a small rust spot with a paint touch-up kit, a sanding block, and some rust protectant.
Here are the basic steps to follow:
  • Wash and dry the area completely with a mild detergent
  • Use a sanding block (fine grit, between 320 and 400) to remove all the rust in the affected area
  • Wipe the area clean with a soft microfiber cloth
  • Apply rust inhibitor to the whole area and dry completely
  • Use a paint touch-up kit to apply primer, color, and topcoat to match the rest of your car
