How do you clean fouled spark plugs?

My mechanic tells me my spark plugs are fouled. I’m trying to save some money and I’m wondering if I can reuse this part. How do you clean fouled spark plugs?

While it’s typically better to buy new spark plugs, you may be able to clean fouled spark plugs with a wire brush and a plug cleaner.
Worn-out parts don’t perform as well as new parts, unfortunately. But lucky for you, new spark plugs are pretty affordable!
However, if you prefer to try cleaning your fouled spark plugs, here are the basic steps:
  • Remove the spark plugs
  • Brush off the plugs with a clean rag
  • Spray the firing end with a carb cleaner or plug cleaner
  • Wait 10 minutes, then scrub with a wire brush while wearing gloves
Once the plugs are clean, use a can of compressed air or an air compressor to completely dry the plug. Now you can reinstall the spark plugs according to the specifications in your owner’s manual. Make sure you use a new gasket, if necessary.
