Is it legal to build your own car?

I’ve been repairing beater cars for years, but I’ve always wanted to build my own vehicle. While reading about kit cars, I’m unsure if they’re legal. Can I legally build my own car?

Kit cars have been popular for decades for gearheads and car enthusiasts alike. As a result, it is legal to build your own car, and you can even buy a kit online. Plus, you can
modify the car
, so it’s just what you want.
However, getting the car designated as street-legal by the state is a different ordeal. All cars on U.S. roads have to pass stringent safety standards as outlined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. So to make your car legal, follow these steps:
  • Get the forms from the DMV.
  • Get a car insurance policy on the car. Some car insurance companies offer kit car insurance, so that’s your best bet. If they don’t offer it, shop around or ask what other policy may cover it.
  • Take your car to the Highway Patrol office in your state for certification and verification.
  • Obtain a weight certificate.
  • Do an emission control inspection.
  • Get your license plates.
