How do you check if you have car insurance?

I’m moving my mom into a retirement home, and I’m taking over her finances—and her car. I want to check her car insurance policy. How do I find this?

A major life change comes with a lot of bureaucratic hassles. Fortunately, you should be able to check on her car insurance pretty simply.
If she knows her car insurance provider or has her insurance card in her glove compartment, it should be pretty easy to check the policy via the provider’s online portal. Assuming you have the car’s vehicle registration number, you can also check with the DMV.
In case you can’t find that you could check her bank statements to see if she made payments to any providers. Then, call the provider to get information on the policy. It’s also possible to reach out to the Secretary of State. In many states, their office keeps records on car insurance. You can call or visit in person, all you need is your mother’s identifying information.
If none of that works, you can get a new
car insurance
quote. When you apply, an insurance agent can run a CLUE report that may be able to find your policy. It will also be able to tell you if the policy has lapsed.
