How do I wire an electric car seat?

I just bought some aftermarket seats for my 2019 Chevy Blazer. I want to save money by putting them in myself. While I have a basic knowledge of electronics, I’m not sure how to wire them. What’s the best way to wire an electric car seat?

Putting in new power seats is a great way to add comfort, convenience, and value to your car. So if you want to wire an electric car seat, you need to run the car seat to a fuse, not the battery. By running it to a fuse, you won’t burn out your battery and you can have a failsafe in case the electric seat overloads the system.
Keep in mind that this is a very advanced project. If you don’t feel comfortable, take your car to the shop and expect to pay about $500 to complete the electric car seat wiring.
If you’re feeling confident, then try it yourself. To wire an electric car seat, follow these step-by-step instructions:
  • Use the wires from the electric car seat and run them to the fuse box. Note that this will take considerable work. You have to run the wire underneath the flooring on the driver’s side through the dash to the fuse box. This is an extremely difficult task that requires removing panels and the dashboard. Only execute this if you know what you’re doing, as you can damage your car’s interior.
  • Purchase a wiring harness that has either an 8-prong or 16-prong plus ground wire.
  • The fuse box should have some extra spaces for custom work. This is where you’ll wire in the fuse for your electric car seat.
  • Note that wiring will vary by aftermarket seat and by your particular vehicle and model.
