“Swapping your car insurance is an important decision, but many people do it regularly to save money or to receive better customer service. So don’t get frazzled. It’s easy to do.
To start off, you may want to think about why you’re switching your
car insurance
. Everyone has their reasons, but maybe you need something more concrete. Some reasons to switch include:- Better prices
- Moving to a new city or state
- Experiencing a life event such as buying a home, getting married, or having a child
- Adding a new driver to an existing policy
After you’ve identified why you want to switch, the next step is to figure out if you’re going to get charged a penalty. While most providers prorate your policy and give you a refund, some may also charge a cancellation fee which can wipe out any savings you might get from switching your policy. You also need to make sure you don’t get a lapse in coverage, so shop around a month or so before you swap policies or wait until you receive a renewal notice in the mail.
