How do I stop my Garmin from counting my steps while I’m driving?
I decided to start using my Garmin Vivoactive to track my daily steps as part of my New Year’s resolution. But I drove to work today, and when I checked my Garmin, it had registered the drive as part of my total steps! It kind of defeats the purpose if I can’t accurately track my steps. Is there a way to disable my Garmin from counting steps while I’m on the road?

Getting a step tracker is a great way to keep and hold yourself accountable, but other Garmin users have reported similar problems with their devices. There is currently no setting that stops Garmins from tracking your steps while driving. When you get into the car with your Garmin, you’ll have to manually turn off activity tracking while you’re on the road to prevent it from counting your driving as steps.
You can do that by following these instructions:
- Press down on the touchscreen and hold
- Select Settings
- Select Activity Tracking
- Select Status
- Select Off
Then, when you’re ready to start tracking again, turn the Activity Tracking back to On. This is the most effective way to keep your Garmin from tracking your steps on the road.
