How do I remove a car stereo?

How can I remove my car’s stereo? My car stereo’s busted and I want to save money by installing a new stereo myself. To start, I want to know how to remove the original stereo.

Congrats on your new stereo! Props for installing it yourself, too.
You’re going to need a few tools before you can start removing your old stereo:
  • Trim removal tools (including a prying tool)
  • Socket wrench/ratchet set
Here’s what to do:
  1. Remove the control panel: Insert the prying tool between the heater control and the dash to remove the control panel.
  2. Remove the trim panels and bolts: Pry out the radio trim panel to expose the radio fasteners. Then remove the retaining bolts.
  3. Disconnect the wires: Disconnect the electrical connectors and the antenna from the back of the radio to lift it out.
And there you have it! Stereo removed.
