How do I put a Jeep Wrangler in neutral without the key?

I have a Jeep Wrangler, but the battery is either dead or drained. To make matters worse, it’s parked in my driveway blocking my car, and my husband took the keys with him. Is there a way to put a Wrangler in neutral if I don’t have the key?

Yes—you can definitely put a Jeep Wrangler in neutral without the key as long as you can get into the vehicle. If the car’s locked, you might be out of luck. But if the vehicle is open, follow these steps to put the Wrangler in neutral:
  1. Hop into the driver’s seat.
  2. Look at the stick shift.
  3. On the trim of the stick shift toward the front of the vehicle, you should see a small plastic door.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the plastic door open.
  5. Once open, you should see a red or orange strap.
  6. Keep your foot on the brake.
  7. Pull on the strap, which is attached to a metal lever that overrides the electronic gear shift. This will put the Wrangler in neutral.
  8. Once you’ve moved the vehicle, push the lever back down to return the Wrangler to park.
