How do I maintain a constant speed while driving?

I recently got my learner’s permit and started practicing driving a few weeks ago, but I’m having trouble keeping my speed constant. How can I get better at this?

Congrats on your new driving permit! It’s very normal for many beginners to have trouble staying at a constant speed while learning to drive. Here are some tips to help ease your nerves behind the wheel so you can maintain your speed:
  • Listening to the engine: Doing this while checking the tachometer for your RPMs can help you get a feel for how your car responds to acceleration. As a bonus, knowing how your engine typically behaves can help you notice problems before

    !
  • Practice acceleration: Think about how you accelerate and practice in as many different road and weather conditions as possible. For example, if you go up an incline you will need to apply more effort to the gas pedal and when you go downhill you will need to apply less effort. Learn how to understand and work with acceleration instead of fighting it.
  • Keep with traffic: If you’ve only practiced in an empty parking lot, it’s time to graduate to some light traffic driving. Prevent yourself from overthinking by paying more attention to your surroundings—it can help make constant speed come more naturally.
Keep up the good work! Remember, learning to drive takes time… and if you’re really impatient, there’s always
