How do I get rid of sand fleas in my house?
Last week I went camping in the dunes and I brought back sand fleas. They’ve infested my home, and I’ve been bitten several times already. This is miserable. How do I get rid of sand fleas?

That’s awful! Sand fleas are an extremely annoying presence. As you’ve found out, they have a very painful bite that can lead to disease and skin disorders. Since you’ve already been bitten, you should probably schedule a check-up with your doctor to make sure you didn’t catch anything.
As for how to get rid of the sand fleas infesting your home, the process is fairly simple if a bit tedious. You’ll need to salt and then vacuum every inch of your property.
Before you get started eradicating the sand fleas, it’s important to make sure you know where they’re coming from. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea where you picked them up, but it’s still a good idea to check other sandy and/or muddy areas around your house.
Once you’re sure you know where the source is, it’s time to get rid of those nasty sand fleas. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Sprinkle salt over your carpets and furniture, let it sit for 24 hours, then vacuum it up. This will both kill and dispose of nearby sand fleas.
- Strip all your linens off, disinfect them, then wash them.
- Wash any pets that you have as sand fleas can affect animals as well
- Consider paying for a professional steam cleaning service.
If you’ve tried the steps above and you’re still finding sand fleas, it may be time to call an exterminator.
