How do I get home insurance to pay for my air conditioner?

I am about to buy a replacement air conditioner–my old one died after a long career of cooling. Any chance an air conditioner is covered by my homeowners insurance?

Best of luck with your air conditioner shopping! Air conditioners are sometimes covered by homeowners insurance, but it probably won’t be in your case.
An air conditioner is considered, in insurance terms, either personal possession or a structure of the home. However, you can only make a claim if the air conditioner is damaged by a
covered peril
. These are unexpected, sudden incidences, like a fire or storm.
An air conditioner that breaks due to age or wear and tear is not covered by homeowners insurance. In your specific case, you’ll probably need to replace the A/C yourself.
