How do I get a car key made without the original?

I lost the only copy of my car key, so I’m stuck without a car. Is there any way for me to get a car key made without the original?

It’s always frustrating to lose your keys! Luckily, you have two options for making a new car key without the original:.
  • Visit your dealership. The dealership where you purchased your car should be able to replace the key for you. While a dealership replacement can be pretty expensive, they probably have the key you need in stock and can complete the programming in less than a day.
  • Use a locksmith. Some dealerships outsource their key work to a locksmith, so this may be a good route for you to take as well. Remember, the locksmith will need the make and model of your vehicle, along with your VIN,
    registration
    , and vehicle title.
While it may take a little extra work to get a replacement from a locksmith, they’ll only charge around $200. Alternatively, a dealership will likely cost between $150 and $600.
