How do I change the oil in my 2018 Honda CR-V?

I’m going to try to change the oil in my 2018 Honda CR-V myself. What type of oil do I need, and how do I go about changing the oil?

Learning how to change your own oil and filter is a great skill to pick up. A 2018 CR-V takes a full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil and a 5-quart canister should be all you need.
The following steps provide a basic overview of how to change the oil in a 2018 Honda CR-V:
  • 1. Warm up the engine and then turn it off
  • 2. Jack up the car and secure it. Be sure you are parked in a level place. Then jack up your car on
    jack stands
. Use wheel chocks as well to keep the car securely in place
  • 3. Drain the old oil into a pan for recycling. Locate the oil drain plug and remove it. Allow the oil to drain into your drain pan for at least 15 minutes
  • 4. Remove the old oil filter
  • 5. Install the new oil filter
  • 6. Put in new oil and check for leaks
  • 7. Check the oil level
  • 8. Dispose of the old oil according to regulations
For more extensive directions, consult your owners manual. Once you’ve changed your CR-V’s oil and filter a few times, you’ll likely become an expert!
